This new single residence in Mount Martha on the Mornington Peninsula, draws on the courtyard house typology, making the best use of a battle-axe block with northern orientation towards the street. In section the house consists of two simple skillion roof forms which rise over the living area and descend along each bedroom wing towards the northern boundary. This section informs the entire design and allows for a gentle sense of enclosure and privacy to the courtyard whilst maximising northern light. Upon arrival guests are led through a screened and landscaped walkway which allows glimpses into the courtyard. The clients love of salvaged material has been embraced to add texture and interest to the restrained form and palette with the introduction of recycled timber, steel and stone.
